Abstract
This paper discussed the effect of metal ion(Na^+, Ca^2+) on the microorganism attachment and characteristics of activated sludge in order to facilitate attachment in support carrier. When 0.5meq. Na^+ was added in activated sludge, attached microorganisms were increased 1.5 times(27.0 ¡¿ 10 exp(7) CFU/§²), as compared with no Na^+(18.1 x 10 exp(7) CFU/§²) added. But attached microorganism was slowly decreased as the Na^+ concentration is more increased. In case of Ca^2+ added, maximum amounts of microorganism were reached 40.1 ¡¿ 10 exp(7) CFU/§², and increased 2.3 times more than no Ca^2+ added. Zeta potential of activated sludge was -9.65 mV. As Na^+ and Ca^2+ was added into an activated sludge, isoelectric point were reached at the concentration of 0.5 meq. Metal ion addition caused hydrophobicity of activated sludge to increase. Amounts of extracellular polymeric substances of activated sludge were increased with Ca^2+ addition, but Na^+ addition did not influenced the formation of extracellular polymeric substances. The removal efficiency of TOC was not affected with metal ion addition.
